How can I upload a photo?

Who and What

People like to know what to expect, and a photo is always helpful. If something is missing a photo and you have one, do everyone a favor and upload it. To upload a photo you must have a user name (getting one is no problem).

One morning, after some snowfall, Emily and I were driving down a back-road in Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The snow was still on the trees at the higher elevations, and I saw this nice view when we rounded a bend. Let's add it to the park.

Adding a Photo to a Park

  • Submission Link

At the bottom of GSMNP's General page, there are a set of "new" links. Click the link to submit a new photo for this park. Submitting a photo like this will link it with the park, so the photo will appear on the park's page.

  • Upload Your Photo

    Upload Page

We need to upload the photo somehow. The easiest way to do this is to select the digital camera's original image. A scanned photo will also work. The computer will take care of altering the picture to fit on a web page.

Because image files can be so large, it may take a while for the image to upload, so please be patient. If you have several images to upload, it may be easier to upload all of them at the same time in an archive.

    • Upload an Archive

      Upload Archive

It can be tedious to upload more than one image, so you can create a bundle (archive) of images, and upload them all at the same time. Use a program like WinZip (Windows) or gzip (Mac, UNIX). The "Create Archive" menu option on a Mac is useful.

The file should have the extension ".zip", ".tar", or ".tgz".

    • Uploaded Photos

      Previous Images

If you uploaded an archive, or simply didn't finish submitting a photo, it will show up under "Previously Uploaded Images". To submit a photo listed here, click on it.

To free up resources, we will occasionally delete old unsubmitted photos. Be sure to finish submitting them quickly.

  • Submitter Information

    Submitter Info

Once you have a photo selected and uploaded, add information about the image. What do you want to title it? Who took it? Where should it link to?

Also make any comments here about the contents or situation of the photo. For example, if there is text in the photo, please type it here so others can easily read it.

  • Location Information

    Location Info

Where was it taken? If you fill in the latitude and longitude, we'll be able to place the image on a map. If you fill in the IDs, we'll add the photo to that item's page.

We took the picture in GSMNP, so the Park ID should be 1299.

  • Technical Information

    Technical Info

Often, a digital camera will embed technical information in the image (EXIF data), so we'll automatically use it. It's another good reason to keep the clock accurate on your camera.

  • Finished

    Done

After we click a few more buttons the photo will be submitted, and after a short wait it will appear on Unearthed Outdoors. There were no photos at GSMNP before I submitted this one, so now my photo appears on GSMNP's pages.

If more than one photo is added, whichever is rated the highest will appear more frequently.
