Five master photographers offer varied interpretations of the Sierra wilderness. Ansel Adams led regular trips into the Yosemite wilderness as part of his efforts to protect this rare instance of untouched nature, and, as a result, introduced thousands to its beauty. Following his example, the Yosemite Fund asked five well-known Yosemite photographers to once again bring the wonders of the backcountry to the general public. For five years, these five photographers spent a part of their summers in Yosemite's wilderness region, which covers more than one thousand square miles of almost indescribable raw beauty, and the camaraderie that developed between them is evident in the...

Covering the 1169-square-mile park, plus most of Emigrant, Ansel Adams, and Hoover Wilderness, and portions of John Muir Wilderness and Mono Basin National Forest, this Wilderness Press classic has undergone a dramatic transformation. The full-color 1:125,000-scale topographic map has the same accurate trail data as before, field-checked by acclaimed author Jeffrey Schaffer, but has a fresh, more vibrant look. The map is now much easier to read and use, with shaded relief information, more clearly shown place names, and trails and roads better differentiated. The back side includes contact details for permits and reservations, and has a wealth of Yosemite natural history information...

Of all the hiking adventures in Yosemite National Park, probably the single most compelling to visitors from all over the world is the hike to the summit of Half Dome, the 8842-foot granite rock that stands as the Park's signature landmark. For many, it's a much anticipated once-in-a-lifetime achievement. The most popular route to Half Dome's summit is a grueling 16-mile round-trip trek with 10,800 feet in elevation gain and loss. Although the hike is non-technical, with hikers climbing fixed cables up the granite side of the rock, many would-be hikers are hesitant about this potentially risky trip. How fit should you be? What preparations do you need beforehand? What should you bring?...

I've hiked the TYT twice and wouldn't hike it again without this book. Some areas of the TYT are much less travelled than the PCT and without the guidebook, route finding could be extremely difficult in some spots, especially during a heavy snow year.
Thomas Winnett is a good writer and extremely knowledgeable about this area of the country. My only criticism of the book is that its a bit outdated. I think that the last time the book was updated was in the 80's and the trail has changed in a few places due to storms, new regulations, corrosion, etc. If you are a novice in the back country, this could cause you some potential headache trying to figure out where the new trail is. If...
