    Minnesota is a state known for its natural areas —with the BWCA heading the list. Adjacent to the BWCA on its western border is Voyageurs National Park. Two beautiful water based natural areas, yet the differences are staggering: the commercialization of the VNP lies in contrast to the thriving wilderness experience of the BWCA.

    The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW or BWCA), is a 1.09 million acre (4,410 km²) wilderness area within the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota (USA) under the administration of the U.S. Forest Service. The BWCAW is renowned as a destination for both canoeing and fishing on its many lakes and is the most visited wilderness in the United States.

    recreational opportunities in 1926, named the Superior Roadless Area in 1938, the BWCA in 1958, and federally designated under The Wilderness Act in 1964. It wasn't until October 21, 1978, The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Act was established to provide specific guidance for managing the million plus acres of the Superior National Forest.

  • Canada Lynx of the Great Lakes Region

    We are studying Canada lynx to understand their distribution, abundance, persistence, and habitat use in and near the Superior National Forest in northeastern Minnesota. Since 2003 we have placed radiocollars on 33 lynx, obtained over 15,000 lynx locations, located dens, and documented movements and habitat use.
