Sea Stacks
A link between land and sea, offshore islands provide a sanctuary for ocean birds to breed and raise their young. Cormorants and murres nest on ledges; pigeon guillemots and petrels nest in crevices. Ranging far out to sea for all their food, many birds come no closer to the mainland than these rocky outposts.
Some offshore islands are ghosts of former headlands. Surf gnaws islands out of the shoreline. Harder rock is all that remains.
