Going to the Sun Road, Glacier National Park
-Toured on a Sunday in August; went from east to west.
-Saint Mary Visitor Center at east entrance was excellent; got map and other materials here
-Saint Mary Lake was pretty—excellent views
-Jackson Glacier Overlook was great.
-A disappointment was that Logan Pass Visitor Center was completely full at just before noon on this Sunday—would need to get there early in the day to find a spot
-Weeping Wall area had tremendous views; saw mountain goats up front and personal in this area
-If you like mountain driving this is fun for you
-We stopped at many more pull offs than were shown on the official map
-Lots of excellent glacier scenery, even though we were there later in the season after a relatively dry year—there were forest fires in the park in 2003, the year before we were there—however, glaciers were smaller in extent than they would have been earlier in the season or after a wet year
-Lake McDonald area was very scenic.
-Apgar Visitor Center, at west end of Going to the Sun Road, offered many services
-Going to the Sun Road and Glacier Park offer great mountain/glacier scenery—a wonderful experience.
-One of the four in our party saw a grizzly bear in the distance.
-Road is only about 50 miles long, but it is jam packed with sights and interest to delight all
-We received a lot of useful/interesting information while there—the usual park service fold out map—which also had a lot of information on the back of the map, a separate one page map, an outstanding 2004 Summer Guide to Watertown-Glacier International Peace Park, and the Glacier Explorer newsletter with programs and activities for the first three weeks of August.
-Although we were in the Park on Going to the Sun Road for only 5 to 6 hours on one Sunday in August, Glacier could easily be a very satisfying several day vacation.
-I am so pleased that this was part of our vacation in 2004, and the weather cooperated
